How To Become A Soccer Referee

HOW DO I BECOME A SOCCER REFEREE?

USSF Referee Certification Classes are usually held over 3 days, 1 in the fall & 1 in the spring (see below)

  • You must attend all three days
  • You must pass the exam which is given on the last day of class
  • Classes are generally held in the building near the tennis courts at the Crockett Park fields in Brentwood.

Referee Pay Scale for YMCA Games

Under 7/8 (5v5 played on one field)
Referee: $12.00 (one referee only)
Assistant Referee: N/A (see Referee above)
Game Times: 4 quarters x 10 min

Under 9/10 (6v6 played on one field)

Referee: $19.00
Assistant Referee: $12.00
Game Times: 2 halves x 25 min

Under 12 (8v8 played on one field)
Referee: $21.00

Assistant Referee: $13.00
Game Times: 2 halves x 30 min
Under 14 (7v7 played on one field)
Referee: $23.00

Assistant Referee: $14.00
Game Times: 2 halves x 35 min


Under 16 (7v7 played on one field)
Referee: $25.00
Assistant Referee: $16.00
Game Times: 2 halves x 35 min

Under 18 (7v7 played on one field)
Referee: $27.00
Assistant Referee: $17.00
Game Times: 2 halves x 35 min

To be paid the above amounts you must conform to EVERYTHING below:
1) Be USSF certified in the current year.
2) Be wearing the current USSF patch on the left chest pocket. (velcro it on)
3) Be wearing a yellow USSF referee shirt. All 3 referees shirts should match.
(The alternates are black, red, blue, green)
4) Be wearing black shorts.
5) Be wearing black socks with 3 white stripes at the top. (MUST BE PULLED UP)
6) Be wearing black shoes.
7) Be wearing a stopwatch.
8) Be carrying red and yellow cards in card holder with score sheets.
9) Be carrying a whistle. (2 whistles are recommended)
10) Referees assistant flags are very HIGHLY recommended.
11) Referees should NOT wear head gear. (Only all black caps for medical purposes are allowed on sunny days only)


For All Referees on Gameday
1) Keep the score for each game, and be sure to enter each score on gameofficials.net after the game or bring score sheet to the YMCA & referee tent right after the game(s).
2) Be at your game(s) at least 10 minutes before game time to check each team and the game field.
3) Go over the coaches/referee game card with the coaches prior to the game.
4) GAMES MUST START ON TIME
5) Enter the scores on gameofficials.net after your game(s).

COACHES/REFEREE GAME CARD INFO
1) Coaches will shake hands with each other prior to the start of the game.
2) Game official will bring coaches together before each game and discuss the expectations of sportsmanship from the players, parents/fans, and that of the coaches.
3) Players will form a line at the end of the game and shake hands with each other.
